Wednesday Wisdom: Knowing what you want
“One half of knowing what you want
is knowing what you must give up before you get it.”
– Sidney Howard
This quote made me realize that to get what I want I need to give up things such as procrastination, lack of focus, playing on the Internet…
If you think about it, giving up something we do on a regular basis can require huge sacrifices.
Not procrastinating means producing – words on the page, checks on our to-do lists, whatever we need to accomplish – now. Not letting our minds wander means staying on task…somehow. And skipping playtime on the Internet (or the time suck of your choice) – well, that’s too scary even to contemplate, isn’t it?
As the quote tells us, knowing what to give up gets us halfway to knowing what we want. That’s a great achievement in itself.
I’d like to think knowing what to give up – and following through on that – also creates opportunities and choices we’ve never had before.
With all those benefits, how can we not give this a try?
I’m giving up trying to function without a daily task list. In other words, I’m finding focus! (Will let you know next week how that’s working for me. ;))
Are you willing to sacrifice something this week to help you achieve your goals?
All my best,
Barbara
