Excerpt:
“Vanessa, please tell me what’s wrong.”
Bobby was obviously expecting her to put her emotions into words, but she could think of only one thing to say.
“I want to go home, but I don’t know where that is.”
They’d turned onto the highway from the side track to the cemetery. Rain attacked the windshield in sheets driven by wind that whipped the trees in thrashing fury. Dead leaves flew around the car. The road was barely visible, and what traffic there was had slowed. Vanessa heard the tick-tick of the turn signal as Bobby pulled onto the shoulder. He didn’t kill the engine, probably to keep the heater pumping as the world turned colder outside.
Vanessa felt that chill threaten to force frigid tentacles into the car. She imagined tentacles twisting around her and Bobby, tighter and tighter, until they’d both frozen solid. Then Bobby’s arms were around her, pulling her into a strong embrace, stronger than the icy tentacles, maybe even stronger than the chaos that gripped her heart.
“You are home,” he said through her tangled hair, directly into her ear, as if he understood he must make her hear in order to break the grim spell settling over her. “You’re home, right here with me.”
Choking sobs exploded out of her, while her body quaked as if the violent wind had made its way into the car after all and was pummeling her. If it hadn’t been for Bobby holding her so powerfully against him, she was certain she’d burst apart, with pieces of her scattering like the flying leaves, never to be patched together again. He held her, whispering comfort and reassurances as she sobbed.
Every difficult moment, from her longing to find a family to gazing at her uncle the stranger’s grave, came gushing out of her in a wave of sadness more powerful than any grief she’d ever known. Until finally it was depleted, for now anyway. Bobby must have sensed at least some of that as she went still at last in his arms. He moved her gently to the center of her seat and re-attached the safety belt which had come undone in the storm that had wracked her but was mercifully passed.
“I’ll take you to your Aunt Angela,” he said before belting himself in as well.
Vanessa turned her head to thank him and saw that his cheeks were wet, but before she could so much as think how to react to that, by another stroke of mercy, she’d fallen asleep.
