A Time of Fear & Loving
Riverton Road Romantic Suspense Book 5
Mike & Amanda’s Story
On the Riverton police force, there was one guy in particular nobody liked to rub the wrong way. His name was Joseph Prozinski, but everybody called him Joe Pro. He was a police sergeant back when Mike Schaeffer was still in high school.
Any Riverton kid with a bad attitude was bound to run up against Joe Pro, but Mike had done his best to avoid that. He’d joined the force himself eventually, where Joseph Prozinski was now captain. Mike continued to chart a careful course with the guy until Amanda Miller showed up with a story Joe Pro didn’t believe and Mike was skeptical about also.
That should have been the end of that, especially since Mike had murder cases on his hands and pressure to solve them from every side. Too bad he couldn’t seem to let go of the case of Amanda assaulting his heart.
Excerpt:
“Let go of me.”
Amanda pulled against Mike’s grasp, her teeth gritted with the effort.
“Take it easy,” he said in a modulated voice as if he were disarming an overwrought criminal.
Amanda tugged harder.
“Let go of me this second or I’m going to kick you so hard you won’t know what hit you,” she growled.
She surprised even herself. She wasn’t the kind of person who growled. Mike stepped backward without releasing her wrist. Then he glanced down at her feet and began to laugh.
“If you really intend to kick me, I’m glad those aren’t exactly hobnailed boots you have on,” he said.
Amanda followed his glance and saw what he meant. She’d regretted wearing sandals the minute she stepped outside the hotel this morning and found the weather cool again, even though the sun was mounting steadily in the sky. She’d thought about going back inside to change to more substantial footwear, but she was in a hurry. Besides, part of her had welcomed the brisk morning air because it would help keep her alert for the unaccustomed sleuthing she had in mind. The chance of needing to enlist her foot as deliverer of a well-placed kick hadn’t occurred to her. The narrow leather thong encircling her big toe could hardly be expected to inflict much damage. Coral pink toenail polish made the prospect of Amanda as kick boxer even more ridiculous. She sighed and relaxed her grip on the shears she still clutched in her hand, hoping a sigh would fend off the laugh she felt rising against her will.
“See what I mean?” Mike said.
He, in turn, loosened his grasp on her wrist.
“Yes, I do.”
She shook her head in wonder at her behavior. She not only wasn’t the type of person who growled, she didn’t go around threatening people with bodily harm either. Meanwhile, Mike hadn’t let go of her arm altogether as he eased the shears, very gently, out of her grasp and placed them on a nearby table. What he did next could hardly have surprised her more. He began massaging her wrist where he’d held it so tightly a moment ago.
“I hope I didn’t hurt you,” he said.
He spoke softly, and Amanda understood with some alarm that this was no longer the insistent police professional tone he had used when his purpose was to disarm her. There was something far more personal in his voice now. Meanwhile, the rhythmic stroke of his fingers against the sensitive skin of her wrist, at the exact location of her pulse, threatened to turn her anything but calm.
“I’m sorry I nearly stabbed you,” she said, lightly as she could manage.
