Sometimes I miss the days when the most exciting news came through the mail.

Don’t get me wrong – I love e-mails from my editors with contracts attached and messages from the Art Department with new covers for my books. But when it comes to receiving the books themselves, I love opening the carton, inhaling that new-book smell, and being able to hold the novel and fan its pages.

And I especially love the fact there’s no telling the exact date a box like this will show up on the doorstep, which means every ring of the doorbell has the potential to bring an exciting surprise.

It’s not just my own books I feel that way about, though. It’s also very cool to get books I’ve ordered, unexpected (and okay, infrequent) insurance reimbursements, tax refunds, and more in the mail.

How about you? Would you care if you never received another physical piece of mail? Or do you like making that trip to the front door or mailbox?
