Wednesday Wisdom: Just Do It

Now the New Year is here, I’m facing down some hard truths.

Many of the items on my list of 2011 goals have bright-red checkmarks against them.  Mission accomplished.  Success achieved.  Satisfaction level through the roof!

Unfortunately, there are almost as many items left without checkmarks that will now need to slide over to my 2012 goals list.  Probably the result of over-commitment, right?  At least, that’s what I’ve told myself in previous years.  (And I am the queen of over-commitment.  But that’s a topic for another post.)

As said above, this year it’s time to face some truths.

More than over-commitment kept me from accomplishing everything on my 2011 list.  Confession time:  I procrastinated on those goals.

Why?

That requires another list:  Fear of failure.  Fear of success.  Fear of not doing something perfectly.  Fear of not having everything in place to move full speed ahead on projects without having to stop before the finish line.

You name a fear, and I could probably find an incomplete goal to match it.   I’m betting you share some of those fears, too.

Don’t forget the checkmarks, though.  I’m certain you have some of those, also.  Which means we can all feel proud of everything we accomplished in 2011.

Going forward, we might need to make some adjustments.

The best way for me to do that is to find a way to counteract the fears.  Which leads to the quote for this week’s wisdom column, the Nike Shoes slogan:

Just Do It

That takes care of almost everything!

No excuse to procrastinate.  No need to wait until I have all my ducks in a row.  No time to argue with those fears of success or failure.  When I look at the next item on my To-Do list–the item that will bring me one step closer to achieving my goals–I’m just going to do it!

That could work for you, too.  Are you willing to give it a try?

All my best,

Barbara

  2. Louise – you’re right. And there are so many different types of fears, it’s a challenge to push through them.
